The Latent Silence

For once, in your fleeting existence
Do this for you and me
Heed not what comes through
From the endless outlying space
Every sight that tempts a glance
Every sound that stirs the aural sense
Every word that lifts you higher
Every thought that kindles a fire
Let them all stay distant today
Void of impact and void of sway

Give your self to the latent silence
Feel it permeate your bodily frame
Let it soak the fabric of your being
May no traces of dissonance remain
No beliefs to oppose or embrace
No deluded dreams to chase
No memories to bury or bring to light
No mortal fears to hide from or fight

Let it bare, till there’s no more
But a sole presence, that is
you
And its awareness, that is
me
Coalesced in a wordless harmony

Before it begins to fall apart
Before it’s time for you to depart
Much as you can, in this union, stay
Though fear not, for I’ll be moments away.

A little context:

Our senses form an essential medium of understanding and communicating with the outer surroundings. But what happens when they get addicted to these external sensory inputs? They start allowing for a much larger inflow, often to the point of overcrowding. Just imagine a place dealing with innumerable thoughts, words, ideas, opinions, desires, emotions and memories – most of which aren’t necessarily useful. The noise and the chaos within that place would be overwhelming, to say the least. And this is a reality for so many people, who suffer from such internal agony throughout their lives. They try (and fail) to avert it with things like alcohol, narcotics and what not. They travel to far off islands and mountain tops in the hope of finding solace, but never really succeed. They attempt to buy it with money. What they do not realize is that the relief they so desperately seek wouldn’t arrive by numbing the senses or fleeing to a quiet place, but by embracing the latent silence that has forever existed within. Pursuing silence of such nature does not mean eliminating the source of dissonance. No, the real triumph of silence lies in learning to live happily despite the presence of noise. It lies in choosing not to feed it with reaction. It lies in the revelation that there exists certain undiscovered experiences of Self, beyond the mind and body.
